Description

Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS)听is a four-year program that prepares students in the development, deployment, and management of information resources in print, non-print, electronic, and digital formats. The program trains students to apply information technology to basic library operations and functions; to systematically organize, conserve, and preserve information objects, historical and cultural documents, and other intellectual properties; and to harness bibliographical and online tools to support teaching, research and other services. The program culminates with a one-year practicum/on-the-job training (OJT) at the University of Santo Tomas Miguel de Benavides Library and in libraries and information centers both in public and private sectors outside the University.听

  1. Articulate and discuss the latest developments in the specific field of practice.
  2. Effectively communicate orally and in writing using both English and Filipino.
  3. Work effectively and independently in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams.

  5. Preserve and promote 鈥淔ilipino historical and cultural heritage鈥� based on RA 7722.
  6. Select, evaluate, organize and disseminate print, multimedia, electronic, and digital information resources.
  7. Effectively communicate orally and in writing, and at the same time, use a variety of communication methods in a manner that best enables the message to be understood.
  8. Demonstrate logical and systematic approaches to the accomplishment of tasks.
  9. Formulate objectives, policies, and processes, as well as design and manage resources, in anticipation of future educational or organizational changes.
  10. Recognize, analyze and constructively solve problems, provide appropriate direction and assistance, and overcome barriers when necessary.
  11. Identify users鈥� needs and wants through reference interviews, customer surveys, complaint logs, and other means in order to evaluate the effectiveness of current services and improve these and other practices.
  12. Work well in groups and seek ways to build team efforts to solve problems and achieve common goals.
  13. Understand library鈥檚 automation systems and the use of computer hardware, software and peripherals, including online collaboration tools (the Internet, the worldwide web and social networking sites).
  14. Develop information technology solutions (e.g., library automation system, Website, e-mail system, etc.).
  15. Conduct significant research projects that will benefit the library and the organization.
  16. Evaluate and debate information policy (e.g., copyright law, plagiarism, cybercrimes, etc.) and ethical issues applicable in local, national or global context.
  17. Participate in continuing education activities organized by library associations and other entities.听

The University of Santo Tomas provides student services that cater to academic, spiritual, and wellness concerns of students. These support units are found in the different parts of the campus and can be accessed by Thomasians. When the University shifted to distance learning, the services also transitioned to online services to continue addressing the needs of Thomasians.
