, a faculty member of the and researcher of the , presented a research paper entitled 鈥淎nti-inflammatory activity of selected Pandanus species in the Philippines鈥 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Castillo鈥檚 paper was presented during the 6th International Conference on Pharmacy and Advanced Pharmaceutical Sciences and the 3rd International Conference on Pharmacy Education and Research Network of ASEAN.
The research used alcohol and aqueous extracts from the leaves of Pandanus luzonensis, Pandanus panayensis, and Pandanus simplex, and crude extracts were subjected to carrageenan-induced paw edema test.
The findings of the study showed that ethanolic leaf extract of P. panayensis showed sustained inhibitory effects with comparable inhibitory activity, leading to the conclusion that the extract has potential benefits in treating inflammatory conditions.
Castillo鈥檚 co-authors in the paper were Prima M. de Jesus, Kerstin Mariae G. Ponsaran, Prof. Jovencio G. Apostol, PhD, and , whose seminal research on the Pandanus helped spur efforts to study the species.
