Architecture alumnus and photographer Paul Alysson Quiambao mounted his photo exhibit called “Pag-Asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan”, which aims to raise awareness of the challenges in the West Philippine Sea on January 14, 2025, at the UST Main Building Lobby.

Amidst China’s ships lurking in Philippine territory, Quiambao documented and delved into the daily lives of Pinoys who showed their resilience on the Pag-Asa island, located in the contested sea zone.

Moreover, he also showed the damages caused by Chinese vessels in the reefs and another maritime resource.

Quiambao, who told stories with his lenses, urged the Filipinos to raise awareness about the perils our fellow citizens face daily in their backyard. “Whether through artistic expression, fact-checking social media content, or simply engaging in discourses, we can all contribute to amplifying the voices of those affected,” Quiambao said.

“Visual storytelling, particularly photography and through cartographic maps, offers powerful insights that help us better understand our maritime situation today,” he added, underscoring the power of photography and maps in stirring emotions and brewing discussions on maritime security that aim to inspire action.

Pag-Asa sa Gitna ng Kalayaan launch was organized by the UST History Society of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP). The exhibit will run until February 7, 2025.

The University of Santo Tomas, through the Graduate School Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics, bagged the prestigious Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) grant for its Samar Fortification Project. This grant, valued at Two Hundred Forty-Five Thousand Dollars ($245,000.00), will be a game-changer in the Safeguarding Sentinels Of The Samar Seas: Conservation Project of Samar Fortifications.

With a transdisciplinary approach, the project will advance heritage research, education programs and tourism promotion that will dramatically impact the Samar Province’s holistic development. These forgotten fortifications are value-added to Spark Samar’s program by promoting historically significant tourist destinations that provide opportunities for community-driven conservation.

To jumpstart the project, the US Embassy in the Philippines, Deputy Director for Public Engagement Chad Kinnear, joined by Resource Coordination Specialist Mr. Edwin Raymund A. Vergara, conducted an ocular inspection last November 21-22, 2024 in three (3) fortification sites in Samar Province. They were accompanied by the university’s composite team from USTGS-CCCPET, UST College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, and UST College of Architecture. Samar Governor Sharee Ann Tan expressed her sincere gratitude to the US Embassy of the Philippines and to the University of Santo Tomas.

Ms. Beverly M. Bautista, MAEd, Officer-in-Charge of USTGS-CCCPET and Project Director, emphasizes that this initiative aligns with the university’s vision of preserving cultural heritage that will inspire future generations as responsible stewards. Through the AFCP grant, USTGS-CCCPET gets to continue its role as a prime mover of cultural heritage preservation, advocating  heritage utilization toward community development.

The project is set to launch on December 4, 2024, in Sta. Rita, Samar, in partnership with Samar Provincial Government and the Local Government of Sta. Rita.

The AFCP, established by the US Department of State, supports projects worldwide that preserve cultural heritage, including historic buildings, archaeological sites, collections, and intangible heritage such as traditional crafts and languages.

Selected BS-Architecture students participated in the College of Architecture’s inaugural Summer School program on June 10, 2024, at the Beato Angelico Building Audio-Visual Room.

University of Reading, UK’s Architect Graham F. Thompson guided the participating students in the said program, sharing his expertise, projects, and some tidbits of experience he reaped in his travels worldwide.

The students were tasked to find mundane spaces in the campus that could be worked with and then bring the best of it through a mobile or static architectural device/intervention.

Afterward, the students engaged in discourses where they exchanged ideas and notes that would help them refine their design/intervention.

Thompson also shared a primer with the students and encouraged them to make a design that would stand out and speak by itself.

“Architecture is all about experiences. It is all about different experiences that happen maybe every week or maybe a few months. It is really built on you as people,” Thompson said.

Talking about how the project came to fruition, College of Architecture Dean Ar. Rodolfo P. Ventura, MSArch, expressed that he has always envisioned honing BS-Architecture students, helping them utilize their full potential, and equipping them with the necessary knowledge to create their very own designs that will bring pride to the University.

The Summer School will run until June 14, 2024. The final result will be deployed, photographed, and filmed within its context.

The University of Santo Tomas was hailed as the university with the most accredited programs in the country and in the National Capital Region by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA), during its 50th anniversary celebration on December 1, 2023 (Friday).

Apart from the two distinctions, UST was also recognized for having the most number of Level IV accredited programs in the country. Level IV is the highest rating a program can get. UST also won an award for the community outreach/extension program contest. The College of Science bagged Second Prize for “CCHEERS to Laudato si: Care for our Common ý through Environmental Expedition Integrating the role of Service-Learning.”

Thomasian professors were also recognized by PACUCOA. Graduate School academic staff Lucila O.
