The UST RCYC-Nursing Unit led by Margaux Gwyneth Lina (President), Diane Ricci Lavadia (External VP), Aleck Hans Ison (Treasurer), and Asst. Prof. Ma. Carina Rebueno (Adviser) won the Best Presenter recognition during the oral presentation for the research entitled “Filipino community dwellers COVID-19 Knowledge, Attitude, Practices and Health Literacy influence on their Pandemic Fatigue: A correlational study” in the 6th International Conference on Translational Medicine and Health Sciences organized by the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Diponegoro in Semarang, Indonesia on October 28 to 29, 2022.

The study described the influence of COVID-19 knowledge, attitude, practices, and health literacy on the level of pandemic fatigue of Filipinos living in the community. Results revealed that Filipinos have a moderate level of pandemic fatigue. COVID 19 attitude negatively influences pandemic fatigue, while knowledge on COVID 19 directly influences health literacy, attitude and practices. Moreover, health literacy affects COVID 19 attitude and practices. Positive attitude and health practices can create measures to prevent pandemic fatigue. Therefore, development of evidence-based programs and measures focusing on enhancing their COVID-19 knowledge and health literacy to change their attitude towards the COVID-19 pandemic will be beneficial in preventing or alleviating pandemic fatigue in the community.

The international conference was participated by students, graduate students, and professionals from different health discipline  virtually and in-person from different countries.

In an effort to aid the residents who were affected by Typhoon Odette, third year BS-Nursing student Patricia June S. Pomoy held a donation drive in Surigao City and in Siargao island.

Pomoy, whose parents are from Siargao island, said in an interview with the Communications Bureau that she started her call for donations on December 23, 2021, and she was able to raise a total of P100,005, which mostly came from her friends and professors living in Metro Manila. She likewise helped coordinate the support provided by the UST Alumni Association, Inc. and the Thomasian Alumni Leaders Association.

The relief drive was able to send more than 150 relief packs that contained food, hygiene kits, and mosquito coils to barangays Jaboy (109 families), Dayaohay (125 families), and Caridad (422 households). Moreover, according to her, a total of 15 families, whose livelihood is solely fishing and kopra farming, received GI sheets (roof), umbrella nails, and Vulca Seal tubes to help them rebuild their shelters.

Despite being a victim of Typhoon Odette herself, she said that this was her way of giving back to the community that is close to her heart. “By initiating this donation drive, this is one way for me to give back, although I am also a victim of this typhoon (too),” she said.

“I have always asked God to help me become His instrument of love. I am grateful that I have the voice to ask for help on behalf of my community. My voice was able to put roof over their head and food on their table. Indeed, God will make a way,” she added.

The team joins winners from the United States of America, Colombia, Pakistan, Nigeria, Paraguay, and Brazil in receiving the plum.

Third-year student nurses Trisha Mangahas, Stephen Marasigan, Qjiel Mariano, Ivan Martinez, Zysha Marquez, and Anne Novales belonged to the team NeoFlorence, a tribute to Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing. The group, which credited their course Nursing Informatics as an enabler for their innovation, was moved by the “current situation of misinformation and disinformation during the pandemic,” according to group member Qijel Mariano. To come up with their pitch, extensive research was done on public health situationers, existing solutions, and timely innovations to address the “alarming spread of fake news on the COVID-19 pandemic, especially on vaccine rollout.”

With the victory, the team has earned their ticket to present their work during the Generation Connect Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on June 4-5, 2022. During the event, world leaders, innovators, and advocates in telecommunication all around the world will be able to see the winning proposals.
