Guevarra, who facilitated the request of the Department of Health. Officials from the Department of Health – Cordillera Administrative Region received the machine earlier this afternoon, April 19, 2020.

The project team is composed of , Assoc. Prof. Dharmatov Rahula B. Albano, PhD, Dr. Maria Rhona M. Gatpandan-Bergantin, MD, and research assistants Reyza Kathleen A. Dimaculangan and Carlo P. Andres.

In showing trends, Albano cited the Philippine Department of Health (DOH), which “declared a National Dengue Epidemic on 6 August 2019, owing to the 167,607 dengue cases, including 720 deaths, reported from 1 January to 27 July 2019: 97% higher than in 2018, in spite of a delayed rainy season.” While “case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 0.43% as of 27 July 2019 is lower than in the same time period in 2018 (0.54%), [it is] still significantly higher than the regional average of 0.22% in the Western Pacific.” According to Albano, dengue is endemic in the Philippines with seasonal peaks between July and September each year following the rains. Of all laboratory confirmed dengue cases, the majority are dengue virus serotype (DENV) 3 (72%). Dengue is a worldwide concern, and it exists not only in the sub-tropical countries but also in the Northern America, Europe, Africa, Australia and as far as Russia due to the mobility of people around the world.”

Albano contended that “early detection, along with proper medical care, contributes significantly to lowering the risk of medical complications that may lead to death. Prompt delivery of supportive treatment, which must naturally follow from the detection, minimizes mortality rates to even below 1%. In addition, timely and accurate diagnosis is essential to surveillance activities on the circulation of dengue viruses among different populations, outbreak control, dengue pathogenesis, academic research, vaccine development and relevant clinical trials.”

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the University of Santo Tomas as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST except for faculty affiliates of the UST Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in UST, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

The 3^rd ISMS, which coincided with the celebration of the 90^th year of foundation of the college, served as a platform for research dissemination and academic discourse, provided a venue for research collaboration, fostered international cooperation through academic and research partnership, and promoted the Sciences to young Filipinos. Notably, the importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative research was epitomized as non-Thomasians were invited to interact with the presenters and to look for possible future research collaborations. High school students were invited to promote the sciences as a possible future career option. To emphasize, Dean John Donnie A. Ramos, Ph.D., invited the participants and guests to “listen, interact, and forge collaborations with the speakers.” Nagoya City University Vice President Prof. Yuji Imaizumi, Ph.D., was guest.

Moreover, the strive for excellence by the College of Science resonated in this year’s theme, “Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Research towards Intellectualization” as stated by Office of International Relations and Program Director Prof. Lillian J. Sison, Ph.D., in her opening remarks. This symposium gave opportunity to researchers to share one’s techniques and ideas in solving scientific problems – providing an environment that allows different researchers to collaborate. Furthermore, this provided research opportunities for students to contribute in the solution of regional and global concerns. Beyond this, however, the symposium provided means to deepen relationship and appreciation of one another’s culture.

Lecturers were from the partner universities abroad, along with the researchers of the different departments of the UST College of Science. The speakers from the Chung-Yuan Christian University, Taiwan were: Prof. Danny Wen-Yaw Chung, Ph.D., Department of Electronics Engineering; Prof. Hsi-Ya Huang, Ph.D., Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Fang Sheng Tsai, M.D., Ph.D. Director, Urology Department and Vice Superintendent of Academic Affairs, Ten-Chan Hospital; Biomedical Engineering Department.

From the National Dong-Hwa University, Taiwan the speakers were: Prof. Yuan-Ron Ma, Ph.D. Head, Department of Physics and Prof. Yen-Peng Ho, Ph.D. Department of Chemistry, College of Science and Engineering.

Lecturers from partner universities in Japan were (Nagoya City University) Prof. Hidehiko Nakagawa, Ph.D., from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Prof. Kazunobu Sawamoto, Ph.D., of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences. From the University of Shiga Prefecture, the lecturers were Prof. Shuhei Ban, Ph.D., of the Department of Ecosystem Studies, School of Environmental Science, while from Hiroshima University, the speakers were Prof. Tsunehiro Aki, Ph.D., and Prof. Yoshiko Okamura, Ph.D., from the Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Graduate School of Advanced Sciences of Matter.
