The Institutions Rankings covers research groups run by government agencies, hospitals, universities, private companies, and nonprofit organizations.

Given the 9054 institutions ranked in 2024, UST landed in the 56th percentile overall. In the three criteria of SCIMago, UST landed in the 23rd percentile for “societal impact”, 54th percentile for “innovation outputs”, and 79th percentile for “research performance”.

Since the SCImago Institutions Rankings began in 2009, UST first landed in this list in the year 2020.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in Los Baños, Laguna and the Diliman (Quezon City) campus of the University of the Philippines have been the top two Philippine-based research institutions from 2009 to 2024.

The top five Philippine institutions for 2024 are IRRI (2971stworldwide), UP Diliman (3151st), the Department of Science and Technology (DOST, 3334th), De La Salle University (4459th), and UST (4987th). About 15 research institutions were ranked last year.

SCImago’s Institutions Rankings computes a “composite indicator” that shows the combined score coming from three indicators: research performance, innovation outputs, and societal impact. These three indicators get measured by the research institutions’ web visibility.

These publicly-available Rankings <> are run by SCImago Lab, a Spanish consulting firm that is a spin-off from the group called SCImago Research Group. SCImago Lab runs analyses of scientometrics, scientific publications and web visibility.

SCImago’s Institutions Rankings also use the world’s leading scholarly database Scopus, which is also used by academic consulting firms Quacquarelli Symonds and TIMES Higher Education in their annual world university rankings.

The 2024 SCImago Institutions Rankings see the “research performance” criterion carrying a 50 percent score, “innovation outputs” a 30 percent score, and “societal impact” a 20 percent score.

Among Philippine institutions, UST was ranked 12th out of 13 groups in 2023; eighth out of 14 groups in 2022; tenth out of 13 institutions in 2021; and eighth out of 12 Philippine groups in 2020.

This innovative conference aims to explore the burgeoning field of ethical literary and cultural criticism, a theory and method of interpreting and analyzing literature from an ethical perspective. The event will gather esteemed scholars and students from around the globe to highlight the intersection of ethics and literature, and the role it plays in understanding and shaping human experiences.

Keynote Lecture by Distinguished Professor Nie Zhenzhao

The conference will be highlighted by a keynote lecture titled “Ethical Literary Criticism: Its Theory and Application,” to be delivered by Professor Nie Zhenzhao, MAE, of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Professor Emeritus of Zhejiang University, China. Professor Nie is a renowned scholar in the field who is the President of the International Association of Ethical Literary Criticism. His work has earned him international recognition, including being named to Stanford University’s World’s Top 2% Scientists List and a Most Cited Chinese Researcher by Elsevier.

Plenary Speaker: Professor Leonard Harris

Joining the spotlight at the event as a plenary speaker is Professor Leonard Harris of Purdue University, Indiana, a celebrated philosopher known for his critical pragmatism and the Harrisian conception of philosophy. Professor Harris’s contributions to the field, including his notable works on philosophy and ethics.

To deliver plenary lectures throughout the conference or serve as reactors after the panel presentations are highly esteemed academics from top universities abroad like Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in China, Kyung-Hee University in South Korea, Purdue University in the US, and the University of Macau.

Guest editor Rev. fr. Nicanor Pier Giorgio R. Austriaco, O.P., SThD, PhD said in his that the essays in this volume “confirm the intuition that the scholastic framework can help Filipinos better understand how they feel, how they choose, how they think, and how they act.”

4. by Marc Adrian de la Peña, O.P. studies “utang na loób” in conversation with St. Thomas’ Aquinas’ notion of gratia/gratitudine, demonstrating how Aquinas’ notion of gratitude can elucidate ways to avoid the pitfalls of utang na loób and distinguish circumstances where utang na loób becomes either a virtue or vice.
5. by Vince Stanley B. Iñigo, O.P. explores pagpapakabayani in dialogue with the Thomistic account of virtuous anger.
6. by Ian Joeffrey G. Melendres, O.P. proposes that the virtue of paninindigan must play an integral part of any successful Filipino virtue ethics, aiming to discover that this virtue can fundamentally anchor the Filipino virtues in katotohanan, i.e, truth.
7. by Julian Christopher Morada, O.P. examines the writings of Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologiae regarding the virtue of faith.
8. by Regalado Trota José presents the documents that show the strong Santo Niño devotions in the northernmost towns of the Ilocos and Cagayan provinces.

1. by Jeffrey Segovia tackles the understanding linked to the Valley of Hinnom as an allusion to the concept and image of eternal damnation, as well as uncovering the mystery of the silver scrolls of Ketef Hinnom, which is claimed to be one of the most important Biblical discoveries of antiquity.
2. by Leo-Martin Angelo Ruiz Ocampo investigates the experience of the School of Salamanca, how its core dynamic termed as the “Salamanca Process” embodies the charism of the Dominican Order, and the ongoing attempt to recover it as a model for the life and mission of Dominicans today as expressed in official documents of the Order.
3. by José Eugenio Borao Mateo is grounded on Spanish and Dutch documentary sources to provide a better understanding of the archaeological findings in the church, thus offering new perspectives on the archaeological conclusions by highlighting the distinction between two crucial elements: the convent and the church. In other words, the paper proposes the possibility that the final church, constructed with stone, may have remained unfinished, adding complication to the interpretation of the discovered cemetery in the same site.
4. by Allan A. Basas interrogates the presence of the notion of social responsibility in human being’s experiences, in recognition of the inviolability of the Other. Basas likewise urges the readers in a thematic discussion in the cusp of Levinas’ notion of social responsibility and Filipino sociality to show that responsibility is a universal value with many faces.
5. by Alexandre Coello de la Rosa tackles the figure of Don Diego Vázquez de Mercado, the first secular archbishop of Manila, and brings the other aspects of his tenure, such as his relations with the cathedral chapter and his tense relations with the governor of the Philippines, Don Juan de Silva y Enríquez (1609-1616).

7. by Joselito B. Zulueta revisits the launch of the two volumes of “Doing Philosophy in the Philippines: The Thomasian Collection”, culled from the pages of UNITAS journal. It has embodied the most representative and the most extensive compendium of classic philosophical thinking in the 20th century in the Philippines. The two-volume book was edited by UST Professor Emeritus Alfredo P. Co and published by the UST Publishing House.
8. by Jose Adriand Emmanuel L. Layug talks about George Weigle’s service to the church and to all men of goodwill in search for the true meaning of Vatican II in his work “To Sanctify the World The Vital Legacy of Vatican II”.
9. by Melanie D. Turingan talks about the virtues exhibited by St. Joseph the Worker as God’s dutiful stalwart that provided Jesus a home together with the Virgin Mary, as well as how reader would take inspiration from his virtues.
10. by Blaise D. Ringor explored how Seifert synthesized the philosophies of thinkers like Dietrich von Hildebrand and Josef Pieper with the thoughts of Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II, concurrently offering a critical response to the work of scholars such as Josef Fuchs, Jonathan Harrison, and Franz Böckle. This allows the reader to engage and delve on the primary texts written by Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II.
11. by Marian Joanne Co-Pua, DCL celebrates how fr. Manlangit masterfully delivered his advocacy and its odyssey in tackling the core and essential concepts, principles, and issues in Bioethics.
